Unlike in Quickstart mode, X-TREME mode has no aim-assist which makes it much more difficult to hit maneuverable ships unless the player is very good. Player starts with 450 credits, a buster, 1 5mj shield, 2 beta IREs, and only a boost extension, singularity engine time accelerator, and video enhancement goggles. This makes it much easier to hit predictable enemies but can make it more difficult to hit unpredictable enemies. There is also a significant auto-aim or aim-assist which forces one's projectiles towards the lead crosshair. Finishing Quickstart mode does not appear to unlock any additional modes. The player starts with 100,000 credits, a nicely equipped buster, as well as a mercury (cargo transporter) with only 2 5mj shields and a singularity time accelerator. When one finishes all the storyline missions in this mode, it unlocks the anonymous Argon game mode.Įasy difficulty. Player starts with a Buster and 5000 credits. The protagonist (main character) is Julian Brennan, a human male aged 21.Īverage difficulty.

Unfortunately the improved graphics and some of the additions in the later games have resulted in a game that has become very demanding on the poor computer - very slow frame rates if you build extensively in any sector (main culprit is the extensive tubes used to link space stations together).ĭRM - though this is generally removed by a patch about a year after release. These are the storyline or campaign games. Support for non-Windows users - Mac and Linux versions are available, and the Windows versions play reasonably well on Linux using Wine.Ī rather distorted view of physics/reality, in the interest of gameplay:ġ) Typical speeds are about 200 metres per second - little faster than a WW2 aircraft.Ģ) Typical distances between space stations and/or gates are about 50 kilometres.ģ) Weapons are mostly lasers, which fire large brightly coloured balls with a speed of about 1000 meters per second, giving plenty of time to dodge them.Īlthough there is good overall consistency from one game to the next, many of the detail changes look odd - typically speeds have dropped, ships carry more guns, but small ships generally lost the ability to land on larger ones. Nice graphics - some screenshots were available in the old forum thread. Additionally the recent releases have multiple side-plots, of varying degrees of difficulty. Good mixture of plot and sandbox - probably stronger on the sandbox side, with the main plot serves mainly as a tutorial. Good mixture of combat/trading/building/thinking, so there is something for everybody.

Good support from the developers - X3TC, which was released about two years ago, is currently on update 2.7.1, where updates contain a mixture of new content, bug-fixes and rebalancing.

Highly moddable - there are numerous mods available, including several very major reworkings to reset the games into different Universes.

I've not seen the first two games, but there is a Superbox planned for release shortly which will contain all five games plus various add-ons. It started in 1999 with X Beyond the Frontier, and the trilogy is now complete with X3 - Terran Conflict (the fifth game !?). It's a series of space trading/fighting games - though in many ways it's closer to WW2 naval/air warfare than to space flight. I might bring across some of the old thread, if we can access the old forum, but in the meantime I'll start by summarising what the X Universe is about. This is a continuation of the thread started on the previous forum by Nostra1 - it was called "X3 Reunion is starting to get addicting".
